On Wednesday July 1, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration and the Rural Utilities Service released grant guidelines for $7.2 billion allocated for broadband grants/loans under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The Notice of Funds Availability establishes a detailed system for prioritizing grant applications and outlines how the agencies will distribute $4.7 billion for the NTIA Broadband Technology Opportunities Program and $2.5 billion for RUS loans and grants. The application for BTOP and RUS funds will be available for review on July 7th, and applications will start being accepted as of July 31st and must be on file by 5:00 pm on August 14th. This is the first of three rounds to distribute the funds.

The Resource Center has made a letter available that supports the use of BTOP grant funds in Colorado for the benefit of public safety organizations. This letter may be included in the grant application packet of any organization that wishes to use it.

Update: The application closing deadline for the Broadband Initiatives Program (BIP) and Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) has been extended until 5 p.m. Eastern Time (ET) on August 20, 2009, for any electronic applications pending as of 5 p.m. ET on August 14, 2009. There are no changes to the filing instructions for paper applications.
